James Needham was born in Rugby, England in 1983 and currently lives and works in Sydney, Australia. He studied at the Oxfordshire College of Art in the UK, graduating with a Diploma in General Art & Design in 2002 and received a Bachelor of Fine Art from Sydney’s National Art School in 2018. James has twice been a semi finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize (2016 & 2018) and in 2017 received the William Fletcher Foundation Artist’s grant.

“My art is primarily concerned with people, either directly through the figure and portraiture or, as in my current works, the traces we leave behind.
My recent works focus on the domestic through a series of still life paintings. Rather than ‘set up’ a still life, my interest is in the objects as they are left behind by us. By using bold, intuitive brush strokes with thick, luscious paint I aim to emphasize the abstract nature of paint whilst maintaining a high degree of realism. “
