Ashley discovered photography at the age of 15 and this proved to be a lifeline for the academically challenged son of Lithuanian migrants. He grew up in Melbourne, studied photography at the Prahran College of Arts and has since enjoyed a long, successful and award-winning career.
The still lifes in this collection are rustic in style, speak to the humble ethos of Australian country cooking and are in the tradition of Dutch Vanitas.
“I have been a photographer for most of my life and I have always worked from an intuitive perspective rather than an intellectual one,” says Mackevicius.
“I invite meditation, not discourse. What I see and construct, I wish to distil to a certain essence whereby the object photograph becomes something other than a thing in itself.”
