Chelsea Gustafsson returns to Murrurundi with a new suite of small-scale, high-impact paintings. This exquisite new series from the Barwon Heads-based artist builds on the critical breakthrough and tremendous popular success of her most recent body of work, in which chairs salvaged from roadside cleanups were dazzlingly recast as the stars of hyper-detailed, highly cinematic still-life miniature paintings.

Gustafsson has amassed a passionate following with her singular mix of realist precision with playfully layered trompe l’oeil effects. Her previous series was immediately snapped up by collectors, and we are anticipating another enthusiastic response to this new release.

Please contact colinesoria@michaelreid.com.au to register interest in Chelsea Gustafsson’s exhibition and receive priority access to her new work.

    31 Jul—25 Aug 2024

Next week, Michael Reid Murrurundi will play host to a creative conversation between close friends, fellow West Australians and leaders in their respective fields, Carly Le Cerf and Rachel Falls Williams.

Both Le Cerf’s sweeping, panoramic landscape paintings and Falls Williams’s delicately formed ceramics delight in the tones and textures of the Australian outback. Throughout their joint show, a rich palette of ochre, pindan and a spectrum of reds plays out across surfaces enriched by thick applications of paint and ceramic glazes with gritty, rough-hewn effects.

Le Cerf’s new body of work plunges the viewer into rocky gorges and up against staggering escarpments that soar like primordial monuments over wide, sunburnt pains. We are thrilled to host this release in what has been a year of major career milestones for the artist, who recently followed her most expansive public project to date with a sell-out show at our Southern Highlands gallery.

Next week’s presentations will be a homecoming of sorts for Le Cerf, whose exhibition career took off at Michael Reid Murrurundi and has since entailed shows at major public art spaces and across the Michael Reid network. Her new series will be paired with ceramic pieces by Falls Williams, whose practice is similarly propelled by her immersion in the landscape and attention to its granular details.

Works from this joint exhibition from Carly Le Cerf and Rachel Falls Williams can be viewed and acquired on our website ahead of next week’s opening. Please contact colinesoria@michaelreid.com.au to discuss works from the show.

  • Artist
    James Lai
  • Dates
    7—28 Aug 2024

We are excited to welcome contemporary painter James Lai to Murrurundi with his spellbinding new series of vibrant and exuberantly expressed landscapes.

The Eora/Sydney-based artist conjures his scenes in a dazzling and distinctive style. Night and day appear to intertwine as Lai’s swooping brushstrokes break into bursts of abstract colour and dreamy, star-dusted skies crested by drifting clouds that melt like magic into tumbling, colour-soaked plains.

“The works are about seeing the landscape as theatre, with its natural and atmospheric elements,” says Lai of his art practice, which aims to convey a sense of movement and drama with a dynamic and upbeat application of paint. “I employ a naïve and inventive style to give character to the natural elements. They narrate the unique story of the landscape.”

Works from this highly anticipated release are currently at Michael Reid Sydney, where they can be viewed in person by appointment. For sales enquiries, please contact colinesoria@michaelreid.com.au

White’s layered approach to oil painting imbues her work with tonal depth, beautiful lustre and textural nuance, lending an element of sumptuousness that sits in counterpoise with her subjects’ natural, unfettered forms.

We are excited to welcome back Laura White to Murrurundi for the first time since her sell out exhibition, Primavera in 2023.

We are delighted to announce the return of Narrabri-based painter Brooke Dalton, whose richly expressive new suite of colour-soaked interior vignettes is now available to preview and require by request.

Conjured via gestural sweeps of impasto paint in lush garden pinks, greens and purples, Dalton’s gorgeous still-life paintings present a bounty of fresh-cut flowers arranged in a spirit of bohemian insouciance and whimsy on tables teeming with books and other curios.

The air of effortless, lived-in eclecticism and warm elegance that colours the spaces Dalton depicts is perfectly matched by her loose, energetic, exuberant painting style, which eschews overwrought detail in favour of movement, life, atmosphere and emotion.

From deep-magenta peonies and creamy dahlias to succulents spilling out of painted Chinoiserie vessels, the artfully undone arrangements at the centre of each painting feel like a perfect distillation of the mood and character of the libraries, living rooms and other uplifting spaces that surround them.

After being thrust into major art collector conversations in 2022, when the Art Gallery of NSW selected her as a finalist in both the Archibald Prize and Wynne PrizeJulianne Ross Allcorn makes Michael Reid Murrurundi debut with an exhibition of paintings conjuring magical impressions of the Australian landscape. In these utterly original works, charismatic critters are glimpsed through overlapping flora and wispy layers of eucalyptus against smatterings of glitter and areas of exposed plywood.

“From top to bottom, left to right, Allcorn’s paintings read as if you are standing within a grove of native trees,” writes Michael Reid OAM of the exquisitely layered thickets of Australian bush brilliantly conjured by the artist with her fine, wisp-like strokes and smatterings of gold-flecked magic.

This exhibition immediately follows the artist’s sell-out show at Michael Reid Southern Highlands in April 2024.

    Jo White
  • Dates
    19 Jun—21 Jul 2024

We are excited to announce the return of Jo White with a new series of small-scale paintings, opening this week at Michael Reid Murrurundi.

Brightly coloured, brimming with humour and attuned to the way familiar objects become lodged in the cultural memory, Another Average Dictionary is the follow up exhibition to our 2023 show inspired by the satirical online newspaper The Betoota Advocate.
White’s new additions to the series share certain sensibilities with the satirical online newspaper, evoking its sardonic spin on sozzled machismo, suburban torpor and everyday peccadillos.

Where Betoota‘s wry reporting on bad behaviour captures contemporary archetypes with biting specificity, Another Average Dictionary affectionately transforms everyday objects into something similarly totemic – richly drawn, warmly nostalgic and with a sting of recognition that lets us laugh at our own foibles.
