The bold and ebullient world of artist Trevor Smith will soon be celebrated with a solo exhibition at The Riddoch Arts + Cultural Centre in Mount Gambier, South Australia, presenting a new collection of his much-adored crochet sculptures.

Spinning sea creatures, birds and other colourful critters from pure wool yarn and festooning them with vibrant embellishments, Smith’s series The Taxidermist offers a playful twist on our impulse to preserve and present the natural world.

Christmas Release

  • Artist
    Jo White
  • Dates
    17 Nov—3 Dec 2023

Artist Jo White has distilled the essence of a classic Australian Christmas with a limited suite of 30 x 30-centimetre paintings produced for the annual Four Pillars Christmas Gin release.

This is the fourth year we have connected a Michael Reid artist with Four Pillars, following successful collaborations with Lucy DysonAndrea Huelin and Jane Reynolds.

From tangled fairy lights and teeming plates of prawns to a Christmas wreath on a fly-screen door, White’s witty series is like an art lover’s Advent calendar – infused with her signature wit, an eye for quirky Australianisms and a spirit of merry nostalgia.

The 2023 Christmas Gin release will be toasted with a soirée at Michael Reid Sydney taking place from 6 – 8pm Thursday 23 November. To join us at the launch event, please RSVP by contacting danielsoma@michaelreid.com.au.

Abstract pools the extraordinary talents of three contemporary painters whose work pulses with effervescent colour, energetic movement and boundless imagination.

This beautifully curated group show features new paintings by Kathy Liu, Ash Leslie and Douglas Schofield – three Australian artists whose work offers exciting new perspectives on abstraction.

From ethereal, amorphous, gossamer clouds of colour suggesting hazy memories or half-remembered dreams to expressive markings and rhythmic gestures that exude maximalist verve, each artist’s distinct practice embraces the expansive possibilities of painting beyond the figurative realm.

  • Artist
    Chelsea Gustafsson
  • Dates
    22 Nov—10 Dec 2023

We are excited to welcome Chelsea Gustafsson back to Michael Reid Murrurundi, who will present an exhibition of new artworks named Chairs.

Gustafsson’s compositions ignite a striking interplay of natural and designed elements. Through her recent paintings, the artist recasts chairs as sculptural subjects that strike playful poses, set against minimal spaces of ambiguous planes.

We now invite collectors to register their interest in Chelsea Gustafsson’s new paintings by emailing colinesoria@michaelreid.com.au.

This exhibition will open at Michael Reid Murrurundi from Wednesday November 22nd.

Affection

  • Artist
    Stacey McCall
  • Dates
    1—26 Nov 2023

Affection by Stacey McCall  is now open at Michael Reid Murrurundi.

With an affinity for the handmade, McCall’s earthy and exquisitely rendered vignettes capture the soft, timeworn character, serendipitous imperfections and muted, mottled tones of domestic objects in ways that suggest traces of the lives lived around them.

“My painting acknowledges the vernacular, the domestic space that holds family,” says McCall of her intimate windows onto loosely clustered earthenware and vessels enclosing flowers and fruit. “The table that has been wiped a million times, the cups held, the tea towels washed and folded and washed and folded. Lemons in the lemon bowl. That little blue vase, just perfect for a camellia.”

Wildflowers

  • Artist
    Louise Frith
  • Dates
    19 Oct—5 Nov 2023

Louise Frith returns to Murrurundi later this month with a new series of paintings inspired by her observations of wild and windswept flora in the bushland around Sydney’s North Head.

Commensurate with this coastal setting’s epic scale, Wildflowers represents a shift from the artist’s more intimate still-life paintings to larger-format landscapes while continuing her close study of forms, textures and small delights gleaned from the natural world.

Frith’s new paintings are bathed in sunlight and beautifully capture an interplay of golden Sydney sandstone with untamed profusions of spiky, gnarled, tumbling vegetation. Works from Wildflowers can now be previewed and acquired before the exhibition’s opening.

  • Artist
    Esther Eckley
  • Dates
    6—24 Sep 2023

Esther Eckley is returning to Murrurundi with a new series of artworks that beautifully depict views of Sydney Harbour and its surroundings. “The inspiration came for this work following some paintings I made of Venice this year,” says the artist. “I wanted to continue with the sea and boat theme and also try something a little bit different from my usual work.”

Awash with light and oscillating between crisp and moody blue tones, Eckley’s new series is an invitation to the Harbour City’s sparkling littoral landscapes. “I have thoroughly enjoyed painting this collection and hope it shows in this body of work”.

Works from Eckley’s Sea Change series are now available to preview and acquire ahead of the opening.
