This week, Dharawal/Thirroul-based contemporary artist Chrystie Longworth will follow her recent postgraduate show at the National Art School with a summertime solo exhibition at Michael Reid Murrurundi.

Longworth’s beautiful new exhibition brings together a vibrant and fabulously offbeat display of voluptuously formed, wheel-thrown vessels from her Domestic Goddess series, building on her studio experimentation at NAS to interrogate narratives of femininity, identity and domesticity.

“Inspired by historical examples of women’s subversive messages hidden within textiles, my practice seeks to revive these traditions through the use of symbols masquerading as decorative patterns,” says the artist, whose playfully idiosyncratic sculptures dazzled visitors to the NAS Postgrad Show in late 2024. “Placed adjacent to a key, the pieces softly whisper to be interpreted.”

Working mostly with terracotta and pigments, Longworth often eschews ceramic glaze in favour of the matte, tactile quality of raw clay surfaces, inviting a subtle dance of light as it “caresses the curves of each sculpture,” she says. Each work’s stacked or clustered totemic forms are finished in alluring tones – from rosy blush pinks to brilliant ultramarine.

“Installed in intimate groups, the work calls for a reassessment of values,” says Longworth, “suggesting that meaningful connections and shared experiences hold greater significance than the superficial ideals often promoted in contemporary culture.”

Our exciting year of art programs commences at Murrurundi with an exhibition of exceptional ceramics by Cindy Tong, who lives and works on GunaiKurnai Lands in the Gippsland region of Victoria. Fifteen new pieces decorated using Mishima and Scarffito techniques beautifully illustrate the flora of the region, embellished with micro crystal glazes.

Work of art in this exhibition behave as time capsules, making permanent the seasonal beauty of Australian flora. Each piece captures a fleeting moment in natures life cycle, freezing it in time as a reminder of how delicate and beautiful these stages can be. Tong’s vessels invite us to slow down, look closer, and appreciate an ever-present beauty.

Cindy Tong’s newest collection is now available to preview and acquire. Please contact colinesoria@michaelreid.com.au for assistance with a purchase.

The elegantly composed tablescapes of Stacey McCall‘s newest exhibition Distil build on the tremendous creative success of her previous exhibition Breathwork, which saw the Melbourne/Naarm based painter move towards a more loose and painterly style. Brought to life with delicate tonal washes and areas of soft or scratchy dry–brush effects, paintings in Distil convey a sense of McCall drawing closer to the objects of her affection.

Opening from Thursday 28th November, Stacey McCall delivers her final exhibition of 2024 which neatly concludes one of the artists most successful calendar years to date. McCall’s elegant and original treatment of her subject matter has attracted widespread acclaim, an impressive precursor to creative heights yet to be reached.

Upstream

  • Dates
    21 Nov—22 Dec 2024

Epic and expressive landscapes from Baden Croft‘s immensely popular Upstream series will soon tour Michael Reid Murrurundi following their recent debut at our Southern Highlands gallery.

This collection of sweeping scenes reveals the artist’s joyful communion with the Australian bush. With thickly loaded brushstrokes, Croft moves across his monumental canvases to trace meandering river bends and the gnarled trunks that border their banks.

If Upstream is rooted in a deep attachment to Australia’s landscapes, it also bears the imprint of Brett Whiteley, one of its most evocative interpreters. Whiteley’s pliable forms and dedication to aesthetics over topographical fidelity clearly resonate with Croft. His canvases embody a similar spontaneity and fluidity, layering bold graphic elements over neutral grounds.

Potter Studio Sydney now at Michael Reid Murrurundi

Adelaide Arnott grew up in the Liverpool Plains of New South Wales, where from a young age she spent hours in her late grandmother’s garden. It was here that her love and admiration for flowers blossomed.

After initially starting floristry as a part-time job while at university, it soon became her passion, and in 2021, Potter Studio was born.

Adelaide buys her blooms directly from the Sydney Flower Markets. She is an early bird and horticulturally, she most certainly catches the worm.

The flowers chosen for Michael Reid Murrurundi reflect the beauty and usefulness of the garden, with an eye for lasting elegance. Speak with the gallery about having Adelaide create the flowers for your wedding or special occasion.
