Paintings of Light

In Paintings of Light Jo White slows tempo by presenting a collection of new paintings that thematically depart from those shown in recent years. Using light as her primary artistic departure point, this exhibition is untethered to any specific culture canon. Instead, White creates thematic cohesion by focusing on light, its atmospheric qualities, and its ability to induce mood. Paintings of Light demonstrates White’s far reaching range, and reinforces her status as one of Australia’s most versatile figures in the field of painterly illustration.

Sunsets, neon signs and the warm glow of living rooms in the chilly dawn mornings of her Armidale hometown all hum with delightful faithfulness. Set mostly against the deep, inky skies familiar to all regionally based Australians, these paintings encapsulate a truly universal sensation.

This series makes its debut at Murrurundi in early August and occurs alongside the launch of new hand painted bronze works which will make their official debut at Sydney Contemporary in September 2026.
