I have scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, 2024
oil on canvas

This white swan is an appropriate subject to play the title role in Hans Christian Andersen’s Princess and the Pea, where a young noblewoman has to prove to her prospective mother-in-law that she is indeed a princess. She is so refined and delicate that she could be discomforted by the presence of a pea under layers of mattresses. Here, I have used the contents of my own linen cupboard. The wallpaper, named Francesca, is based on a design by Walter Crane (1902) for Jeffrey & Co.
